School Counselor

Summary:

The School Counselor provides services to meet the social, emotional, developmental, and mental health needs of children and youth at Jewish day schools and child care centers.  The counselor will consult and collaborate with school and child care staff, faculty, and administration.  In addition to assessing for and providing brief on-site individual counseling at these sites, the counselor will design and facilitate support groups, psychoeducational offerings, and training for children/youth, parents, and staff.  The School Counselor will also serve as a behavioral health support to the Jewish religious schools and camps as needed.  The School Counselor will act as the key behavioral health partner across all of these sites. They report to the Clinical Director.

Annual Salary $43,000-$52,000

Responsibilities:

  • Provides assessment for and delivers short-term counseling services to children and youth at local Jewish day schools and child care centers.
  • Consults and collaborates with school and child care staff, faculty, and administration.
  • Designs and facilitates support groups, psychoeducational offerings, and trainings for children/youth, parents, and staff.
  • Makes appropriate community referrals for children and families.
  • Communicates regularly with parents.
  • Serves as a behavioral health support to the Jewish religious schools and camps as needed.
  • Participates in relevant site-specific meetings.
  • Attends supervision, staff meetings, and staff development activities at JFS.
  • Functions as part of the JFS team to meet the needs of clients and the agency.
  • Other duties as requested by supervisor.

Education & Experience:

  •  Master’s Degree in Social Work or related field (NYS Licensed or licensure eligible preferred)
  • Formal training in a clinical or community-based organization with supervision provided by a licensed social worker, psychologist, or other mental health provider
  • Experience working in schools or in delivering professional development/training highly desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability with verbal and written communications
  • Experience or training (or willingness to be trained) in cultural humility, trauma-informed care, and reflective practice
  • NYS Driver’s License
